Types of Bonds

Covalent: chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule.

  • Sharing of electrons
  • Can be equal or unequal sharing
  • Lower Electronegativity difference

1.6 and below

  • 2 nonmetals

Electronegativity:

Polar: Polar electronegativity difference- .3-1.6

Nonpolar: Nonpolar : electronegativity difference-  0-0.2

Ionic: a chemical bond in which one atom loses an electron to form a positive ion and the other atom gains an electron to form a negative ion.

  • Transfer of electrons
  • Greater electronegativity difference

1.7 or higher

  • One metal and 1 nonmetal
